MND Issues Statement on the Increase of Compensation for the Surviving Underage Children of Deceased Service Members

MND News Report
Date: 14:30, December 31, 2024

To recognize the sacrifice and dedication of service members, the Executive Yuan approved increasing the compensation for the surviving underage children of deceased service members, those who died during military exercises or disaster relief, and the surviving families of deceased service members whose compensation did not reach the minimum threshold on October 24, 2024. Family members will be eligible for these changes starting July 1, 2023. The Ministry of National Defense (MND) completed payments to a total of 3,116 family members on December 24.

The MND has stated that all surviving underage children of deceased service members are eligible for the increased compensation, with each child receiving an increased monthly payment until they are legally of age. In addition, surviving underage children of service members who died during military exercises or disaster relief will also receive additional payment, aside from the aforementioned compensation, which will be paid monthly until they are legally of age.

The MND noted that prior to the amendment to the Indemnities Act for Military Personnel in June 2023, surviving family members could only receive compensation based on the standards in effect at the time of death, resulting in many surviving families receiving insufficient financial support to meet their daily needs. Furthermore, the compensation to surviving families of deceased service members whose compensation did not reach the minimum threshold will ensure that they receive the payment that they are properly entitled to. The MND will continue its efforts to improve its compensation system, ensuring that surviving families of deceased service members receive the proper care and support they need.
