Press release of the Ministry of National Defense

Time: September 4, 2023 at 11:40

In response to media reports today (4th) that draftees on one-year compulsory service will be dispatched to outlying islands next year, the Ministry of National Defense (MND) stated that after servicemen on compulsory service have completed their enlistment training they are to be dispatched to the main island, outlying islands, and central administration as garrison troops according to their training plan. Draftees for outer islands will be chosen and dispatched mainly based on expertise, household registration on outlying islands, and choices selected by voluntary service personnel.

The MND pointed out that draftees on one-year compulsory service will follow the training flow to complete station, specialization, and base training as servicemen of standing forces on voluntary service after they have completed enlistment training and are dispatched to outlying islands so that educational and training resources within the area can sufficiently meet training needs.

The MND explained that servicemen in compulsory service cannot only receive regional bonuses, but also gratuity based on their expertise, position, and actual field of duty during their period of service. Furthermore, the period of compulsory service is furnished as based on the principle of fairness in military service; there are no discrepancies based on region in which personnel serve.
