US Congress has recently announced the bilateral negotiations on the Consolidated Appropriations Act for the 2023 fiscal year. President Biden also signed the National Defense Authorization Act yesterday (23rd). As US Congress resorts to authorization, appropriation, and other large-scale acts to provide itself with the legal basis and diversified policy tools, the US has demonstrated high regard towards Taiwan-US relations and the strengthening of Taiwan’s security, for which the Ministry of National Defense would like to express its sincere gratitude.

The pro-Taiwanese provisions found in the acts clearly stipulate the quality and quantity of US Congress support in promoting Taiwan-US cooperation. These provisions have, for example, requested the US State Department to include Taiwan in strengthening cooperation with Pacific island countries via regional allies and partners, and to assist Taiwan in enhancing its defense capabilities and military inter-operability through the International Military and Training Project. This will help lay the foundation and resources for future cooperation between the two nations.

The MND has stated that it will communicate and discuss with US Congress and the executive branch in accordance with the overall foreign policy of our country, and promote budgeting and allocation of funding with regard to various pro-Taiwanese provisions at each stage of implementation.
