In response to media reports that "the Navy purchased shore-mounted harpoon missiles budgeted at NT$80 billion as a one-off purchase", Naval Command clarifies as follows (12th):
1. Based on threat of an enemy and guidance of joint combat power planning by the Ministry of National Defense (MND), the MND has, to quickly collect combat power, exercised various purchases for the originally planned quantity and amount of procurement, including arms sales, ammunition, and engineering, which are divided into appropriations of respective annual arrangements.
2. The US-made Harpoon missiles can suitably collocate with existing equipment of the Armed Forces, allowing operational use more flexible, increase the difficulty of enemy countermeasures, and effectively enhance joint naval combat capability of the Armed Forces. As such, the MND appeals for the support of our nationals.
