In response to media reports that "the Armed Forces plan to complete three Tuo River class corvettes by 2025, but the President later posted an article stating that the project will be completed two years ahead of schedule and will comprise six vessels" Naval Command explains today (16th) as follows:
- The original Navy "high-performance missile corvettes" project entailed the construction of three vessel from 2017 to 2025. However, the Navy will, in view of the drastically increasing threats from the enemy, construct six vessels as part of a revised project to be completed by 2023 to rapidly boost its defense capabilities, working in accordance with the joint combat capability plan of the Ministry of National Defense (MND). The revision will be carried out after the first vessel has undergone a combat operational evaluation. The revised plan will be implemented under the pretext that the budget will not increase past what has already been allocated for 11 vessels in total.
- High-performance missile corvettes play an important role in "the Domestic Shipbuilding" and "Asymmetric Warfare" programs. The Navy will continue to uphold a most prudent and rigorous attitude towards risk management to implement its policies and enhance its new combat power. Nationals are called upon for support in this endeavor.
