Naval Fleet Command issues a press release in response to media reports stating that "Navy underwater training appears to have resulted in an accident" (November 27, 2020)

Naval Fleet Command stated today (27th) that Petty officer Chiu, a trainee of the Underwater Operations Unit (UOU) from the Underwater Machinery Specialty Class, was found to have run into an abnormal situation by an assistant when a comprehensive training evaluation/accreditation was carried out in the brigade swimming pool yesterday afternoon. The assistant immediately took the trainee ashore and carried out CPR. Medical staff sent sergeant Chiu to the Zuoying Branch of Kaohsiung Armed Forces General Hospital for emergency treatment. At the moment, sergeant Chiu is in the intensive care unit.

Naval Fleet Command further stated that it will, aside from identifying the cause, provide psychological counseling for trainees to prevent the reoccurrence of similar cases. Furthermore, Command has also assigned special staff to explain the situation to the family, and has requested the hospital to provide the best care and treatment to Chiu.
