In response to media reports that "the Chief of Staff of Reserve Command used public assets for personal use", Reserve Command issued the following clarification today (4th):
1. After Command attained preliminary knowledge of the situation and a statement from the party concerned, Major General Ting, acting as the Chief of Staff, did have repair work done at his premises several days ago, but at his own expense. He stated that he never appointed any colleagues from the unit to supervise or carry goods.
2. The root of the misunderstanding arose due to the poor quality of decorating work done by the commissioned contractor. The chief of staff’s wife could not reach an agreement with the contractor after negotiations, which resulted in discord. The chief of staff frankly admitted that he was unable to pay the repair money to the contractor as scheduled as he was busy with work, and his wife, also due to her busy career, had difficulty asking for time off from work. The chief of staff then requested permission to use his own leave from an administrative sergeant so he could help transfer the money to the contractor. The story became exaggerated in media reports.
3. Family members had taken a ride in an official car as it was on its way to another destination anyway and their destination was along the way. The car was never taken out of its assigned route, nor was commissioned for a personal journey only.
4. Command apologizes for the poor impression this story has caused, and has put together a special team of personnel to conduct impartial investigations into situations such as this to be able to set the record straight based on the principle of "No Wrongdoing, No Indulging." The person concerned also stated that he would fully cooperate with the investigation, and was most willing to accept any commensurable punishment if his actions are found to be in violation of the rules and regulations of the Armed Forces.
