1. Introduction to National Defense Undergraduate Program
With the introduction of all-voluntary military, the number commissioned officers enlisted through mandatory conscription has been trending downward. For the purpose of recruit sufficient entry-level officers, the Ministry of National Defense initiated a training program for selected college-level reserve officers in 2017, followed by an undergraduate program in National Defense in 2019 held, upon approval by the Executive Yuan, in conjunction with certain national universities in hopes of attracting more talented youths to the military. These elites will be prepared by 4-year combined academic and military training at undergraduate level for the next-generation military leaders with multifaceted skills and expertise.
2. Institutions Participating in the Program & Achievements
As of the time being, National Chengchi University, National Tsing Hua University & National Cheng Kung University have entered into agreement, with a pending contract to be signed by National Taiwan University on July 24.
