The Ministry of National Defense issued a press release regarding the media coverage titled “The NCSIST incorporated Baidu Cloud into its system, risking disclosure of classified defense information”
In response to the media coverage titled “The NCSIST incorporated Baidu Cloud into its system, risking disclosure of classified defense information,” the Ministry of National Defense (“MND”) said on July 7 that it has delegated a special task force for investigation at the NCSIST. Based on preliminary understanding, the computers at the Chemistry Research Institute are physically isolated from civilian networks and are not attached to any cloud services. It is found that there have been IT protection mechanisms installed, leaving no concerns of information leaks.
The MND pointed out that the procurement process is flawed by incorporating information service provided by mainland China into the bidding announcement, which is against the procurement protocol set forth by the said division. The lack of information risk management and control will be scrutinized and reviewed, while those who engage in the project will be held liable for their misconduct.
To ensure the security of classified national defense information, the MND further reiterated its determination to implement thorough supervision of the NCSIST and demanded that the institute strictly enforce applicable procurement protocol, which prohibits procurement of any products or services whatsoever.
