The Ministry of National Defense announces today (25th) that, in response to the torrential rain caused by tropical depression as well as its impacts, Tier-1 Disaster Response Center at 4th combat zone remains in operation, while Tier-2 Disaster Response Centers remain in operation at the Ministry of National Defense, all armed forces’ Command Headquarters, and the 5th combat zone. The armed forces will remain highly vigilant, follow up with the torrential rain, and assist local governments in carrying out post-disaster recovery works.
The Ministry of National Defense states that the Minister Yen, De-Fa requires all commanders of all combat zones to continue to stay in touch closely and coordinate with local governments. All commanders shall also stay informed of disaster situations, and provide reserve manpower and machinery status to aid local governments carrying out disaster rescue missions. He also asks all armed forces personnel to keep in mind “safety first” when carrying out rescue missions, so that missions are successful with machinery intact and people safe.
The Ministry of National Defense points out that as a response to disasters brought by torrential rain, 1,526 manpower, 92 jeeps, 15 armored vehicles, 19 rubber dinghies have been dispatched to evacuate 625 people in total, stack 3,100 sandbags, remove 0.9 tons of sand and stones, transported 1.8 tons of materials, removed 4.2 kilometers of road obstacles, and removed 20 roadside trees.
1,470 manpower, 57 jeeps, 20 armored vehicles, and 9 rubber dinghies are planned to be dispatched by 4th combat zone and 5th combat zones to Liugui (in Kaohsiung), Qigu (in Tainan), and Dongshi and Puzi (in Chiayi) to carry out post-disaster recovery works.
In addition, some chicken and pig farms in central and southern regions suffered from floods, and the armed forces will dispatch manpower to assist with recovery tasks when there is no safety threats to the armed forces as well as that all forces have adequate personal protective equipment. Such assistance will help to avoid an outbreak of disease and bring negative impact on the environment and people’s health.
The Ministry of National Defense stresses that despite the tropical depression caused flooding in central and southern Taiwan, the collaboration between civilians and the military have lowered damages brought by disasters. Under the leadership of President Tsai, the armed forces remain highly vigilant and strives with full force to assist the local governments in post-recovery tasks, with an expectation of recovering the cities’ landscapes and returning people’s lives to normal as soon as possible.
