The Ministry of National Defense (MND) stated today (22nd) that from February to July 2012 it had received successive reports about "an individual, whose surname is Hsieh, who had developed a network to collect intelligence." The case was notified to the National Security Bureau based on the national security joint defense mechanism, with a counter-intelligence investigation jointly implemented by the Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau. Given the rigorous evidence collection and appropriate damage control measures, the case was later submitted to the Taiwan High Prosecutors Office on July 31 to investigate illegal espionage organizations of communist spies.
The MND stated that the case was then heard by the Taiwan High Court and the verdict was delivered today. In addition to respecting the judicial decision, the MND will continue to implement security education and strengthen security vigilance in the face of the CCP's pursuit of intelligence. In recent years, most of the investigations into espionage cases have been proactively reported by officers and soldiers. In the future, the MND will continue to conduct strict and confidential audits, proactively identify signs of suspicion, and adhere to the mutual assistance and cooperation model among national security teams to prevention communist espionage and to safeguard the overall security of the Armed Forces.
