The Ministry of National Defense issues a press release explaining media reports that "the threshold for early discharge has been removed due to insufficient manpower sources of troops" (August 10, 2013)

Press release of the Ministry of National Defense
Time: August 10, 2024 at 20:20

The Ministry of National Defense (MND) stated today (10th) that in response to the Ministry of the Interior's revised context of "family factors" for draftees of standing reserves with regular physical status when applying for supplementary service and those of alternative service applying for early discharge, the conditions for early discharge by draftees of standing reserves from service in similar contexts has been revised so that it should accommodate the principle of fairness. Thus, what was reported by the media that the "threshold of early discharge has been removed due to insufficient manpower sources of troops" is not true.

The MND pointed out that the Ministry of the Interior has revised the application of filling supplementary service by draftees as well as the application by draftees for early discharge due to family factors in accordance with the Regulations of Fulfilling Supplementary Service for Draftees in Standing Reserve with Regular Physical Status and Draftees of Alternative Service for Early Discharge Due to Family Factors. Since the MND is the competent authority in charge of the "Service Regulation of Servicemen on Standing and Supplementary Forces", it has complied with the law in deleting provisions with respect to servicemen who, under the same circumstances, can apply for early discharge to ensure consistency of government policies.
