The Ministry of National Defense issues a press release explaining the "Legal and disciplinary requirements for a draftee in one-year compulsory military service" (January 1, 2024)

Press release of the Ministry of National Defense

Time: January 1, 2024 at 13:00

In response to media concerns about the "Legal and disciplinary requirements for a draftee in one-year compulsory military service", the Ministry of National Defense (MND) stated that aside from strengthening its military legal and discipline education, the Armed Forces will also implement organizational functions, improve internal management, coach draftees to "convert from being a civilian to the military", and strictly enforce military discipline and leadership. The MND will also work closely with the prosecution office, and hold regular prosecution-military meetings to establish a communication platform.

The MND stated that it matched the timing of the forum and calls on prosecutors to seriously consider violations of military discipline as unruly conduct, disobedience, and fights among crowds, whereas these calls received much attention. Cases that critically affect the management, leadership, and training of troops will be investigated and dealt with quickly and strictly, and the MND requests courts of law to consider such cases with harsher sentences. With active assistance from the judicial authorities, the work of the Armed Forces in maintaining discipline should be upheld and strengthened.

If the military court martial system should be restored during peacetime, the MND indicated that since different opinions remain among the general public, it will continue to promote the Army, Navy, and Air Force Punishment Law and the Adjudication Law for the Rights of Military Personnel while taking the defense of military discipline and protection of human rights into account. Furthermore, the MND will also extensively garner opinions for detailed deliberation to put together a system that honors human rights and military discipline.
