In response to the media coverage on Legislator Si-huai Wu’s written interpellation vis-à-vis the Executive Yuan stating that the passage of either US or China’s military aircraft in and around the sovereign airspace of Taiwan is “legally not provocative” and that the Ministry of National Defense should not be misleading, the Ministry of National Defense hereby affirms that:
The Communist Chinese government has never giving up the option of invading Taiwan and it has been unilaterally destroying cross-Strait relations, sabotaging regional security and stability. The passage of the People’s Liberation Army’s aircraft across the middle line of the Taiwan Strait on March 31, 2019 completely shattered the trust between the two entities. On top of that, the Communist China has carried out 4 intentional drills over our aerial and maritime territories since the beginning of 2020, despite recent outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. The passage of their aircraft is clearly not peril-free and is considered provocative and threatening. We as the defense authorities are stating merely the fact and nothing but the fact.
It is the military’s duty to evaluate and factor in any potential threat to ensure national security, peace and regional stability. The Ministry contends that it is only if we have enough strength will we be able to enjoy security. We will continue to train our troops by the highest standard and be dedicated fully to national defense. The military has absolute confidence in safeguarding our nation.
