The Ministry of National Defense issued press release with regard to the media report “Philippines military announced that they will build a maritime base at Yami Island” (March 23rd, 2018).

In response of the media report that “Philippines military announced that they will build a maritime base at Yami Island”, the Ministry of National Defense said today (23rd) that the national army will keep carrying out full-time surveillance and investigations of the surrounding sea and airspace nearing ROC and the Navy will cooperate with Coast Guard Administration and Fishery Agency to carry out investigation and fishing protection tasks to ensure the legitimate rights of ROC fishermen in the economic seas.

The Ministry of National Defense emphasized that protect the legitimate rights of ROC fishermen in the economic seas is one of the critical task of the national army. The navy investigation and law enforcement is integrated with the task of fishermen protection, and during the upcoming fishing season (April to June) in the future, we will assign further navy and air force military power to enhance the frequency and intensity of fishermen protection and tactically arrange ships standby to integrate with the navy surveillance to implement fishermen protection task to ensure the legitimate rights of ROC fishermen.
