Ministry of National Defense: Continue to Assist Coast Guard Administration in Establishing Self-Defense Capabilities on Taiping Island (May 3, 2016)

(Military News Agency reporter, Li Yi-Hao, Taipei, May 2nd ) Regarding the media report, “Strengthening of Deployed Firepower, Taiwan Increase Military Presence on Taiping Island”, the Ministry of National Defense stated today that the operations are conducted in accordance with the national policies and there are no current plans to deploy anti-air missiles on Taiping Island.

The Ministry states that, to ensure that the Coast Guard officers and soldiers develop self-defense capacities, the military shall abide by the requirements of “Strong Marine Fighting Force equivalent” and continue to offer the Coast Guard combat preparation guidance, personnel training and logistics and maintenance to assist them in strengthening the defense capabilities of Taiping Island.
